- W4243526107 abstract "In people with diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) continues to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality, while the syndrome of hyperosmolar hyperglycemia (HH) is less common, but carries a high case-fatality rate. Both conditions are caused by lack of insulin leading to unrestricted flux of stored lipid, carbohydrate, and amino acid nutrients into the blood, and both are acute, life-threatening conditions, which represent the ultimate metabolic consequences of deranged type 1 and type 2 diabetes, respectively. DKA is characterized by excessive blood levels of ketone bodies originating from uncontrolled lipolysis and HH by extreme hyperglycemia caused by increased endogenous glucose production and decreased peripheral glucose disposal. A thorough insight into the pathophysiology and clinical presentations of these conditions is important to allow prompt diagnosis and fast and relevant initial treatment. Rapid treatment with insulin, electrolytes, and water is mandatory, as is careful attention to the diagnosis and treatment of comorbidities." @default.
