The Coombs test is used in anemic animals suspected of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) that have a negative saline agglutination test. Immunosuppressive medications are used for the treatment of immune-mediated diseases as well as for immunosuppression following graft or transplant surgery. Vaccination is an effective strategy to help prevent canine and feline infectious diseases. Prior to vaccinating an animal, veterinary staff must determine if it is appropriate to vaccinate an animal and, if so, what infectious agents the animal should be vaccinated against. This chapter provides the vaccine recommendations that are based on the guidelines published by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) in 2006. There are several vaccine types available. The most common vaccines are modified live and killed products.
