- W4243667508 abstract "Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a complication of diabetes characterized by severe dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, and ketoacidosis. This chapter presents the pathophysiology of DKA and guidelines on the evaluation and management of DKA in pregnancy. It discusses how the physiologic changes of pregnancy predispose the diabetic pregnant woman to the development of DKA. DKA is caused by an absolute or relative lack of insulin in the presence of increased counterregulatory hormones. The energy demands of the placenta and fetus coupled with the effects of placental hormones make the pregnant woman more likely to develop ketoacidosis than the non-pregnant woman. Symptoms of DKA commonly include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, and generalized weakness. For DKA patients who present with relatively low blood sugars, serial evaluation of blood ketones may be more informative and is a more accurate marker for the resolution of DKA." @default.
