- W4243674801 abstract "During the last fifteen years, there have been a number of investigations into the effects of word processors on writing, and how they might change the way we write. However, until recently, very little research has been conducted over a sustained time period with a large group of children. This study investigated the effects of unlimited access to word processors on children's writing over a period of 20 months. Each of the 22 children in a Year 7 class (eleven year olds) was given a laptop computer to use for all their writing in English lessons. Samples of their narrative writing were collected in the first and fifth school terms, and compared with samples from a parallel class who used only hand writing methods over the same time period. The samples were analysed using criteria for assessing writing quality and syntactical maturity. The results indicated that, against all the criteria used, the children using word processors showed significant improvement over the children using pen and paper. Most of these benefits were immediate and persisted over the period of the study. Although this investigation focussed on children in their first years of secondary schooling, the results are significant for young children who are reaching the stage of editing and redrafting their work." @default.
