- W4243749061 abstract "This chapter investigates the various phenomena prevalent in solids: thermal conduction, electrical conduction, and mass (atomic/ionic) transport. The focus is on the underlying microscopic, or atomistic-level, descriptions that explain the behavior by using principles of atomic and electron dynamics. The chapter provides an introduction to tensors and discusses the directionality aspects of transport behavior, relating the responses or fluxes (diffusion of atoms, electrons, etc.) to the driving forces (electric field, thermal gradients, etc.) along the various axes of a coordinate system. It presents an atomistic description specifically for electrical conduction in oxides and briefly for nitrides, deferring the analogous discussions for the other transport properties. By delving into the microscopic theory of electrical transport in ceramics, the critical role that crystalline point defects play in influencing a macroscopic material property is illustrated." @default.
