- W4243781382 abstract "Microorganisms on Earth colonize a large variety of surfaces from which they can be released into the near-surface atmosphere by a process called aerosolization. Soil, plant, and water surfaces, and also human activities, constitute important outdoor sources of bioaerosols. Microbial aerosolization depends on forces resulting from two main mechanisms: abrasive dislodgment on soil or plant surfaces and bubble bursting at the water–air interface. The microbial diversity in the air does not entirely reflect the microbial diversity at the source: firstly, some microorganisms are more prone to aerosolization and, secondly, the capacity to survive once airborne is also highly variable among microorganisms. The microbial diversity in the near-surface atmosphere constitutes a patchwork resulting from the different aerosol sources, shaped by meteorological and physico-chemical factors, and exhibiting high temporal variability. Quantifying microbial emission fluxes remains a challenging task." @default.
