This chapter and the next chapter discuss the variety of new approaches now available to make precise changes to genes or perturbations of gene expression. The focus of this chapter is base editing, which has the ability to make specific base pair changes at specific sites in the genome in a manner that avoids the need for double-strand breaks altogether and instead relies on direct chemical modification of DNA bases." @default.
