- W4244159622 abstract "The recent TiPS review 1 Rubino A. Yellon D.M. Ischaemic preconditioning of the vasculature: an overlooked phenomenon for protecting the heart?. Trends Pharmacol. Sci. 2000; 21: 225-230 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (87) Google Scholar on preconditioning of the coronary vasculature proposed that protection of the overall cardiac function against ischaemia–reperfusion injury could only be achieved with an intervention on both myocardial tissue and coronary endothelium. A substantial body of evidence, reviewed in the article, indicates that such a dual intervention would be possible, because the endothelium of blood vessels can be preconditioned against ischaemia–reperfusion injury. However, mechanisms of vascular preconditioning are to a large extent less characterized than cardiomyocyte pathways and further investigation is necessary to assure that procedures enabling protection of cardiomyocyte availability and function can also protect against endothelial dysfunction following an ischaemic insult." @default.
