- W4244178045 abstract "High resolution infrared spectra of group IV elements containing defects are presented from the Raman energy to below the energy of the short wave acoustical modes (i.e. 5μ– 150μ). The transparency of homopolar crystals in the lattice vibrational energy range facilitates the observation of one-phonon transitions by absorption. These transitions are made infrared active by the perturbation of the normal modes near the defect and give absorption associated with all branches of the phonon spectrum. The most complete results have been obtained in diamond, where the effects of fast electron and neutron irradiation, nitrogen impurity atoms and unidentified group III acceptors on one-phonon absorption have been measured. In general, the absorption commences with a peak at the Raman energy and exhibits detailed features near energies thought to be those of phonons at critical points in the zone (deduced from two-phonon absorption). Results on neutron irradiated silicon show interesting contrast with the corresponding case in diamond in that strong peaks were found near the density of states maxima of the TO (20μ) and TA (70μ) branches. The theories of Dawber and Elliott(3) and Szigeti(2) predict an impurity-mass dependent shift of absorption peaks from the density of states maxima, particularly in the TA mode. Such a shift is observed in diamond while in silicon the TA peak coincides closely with the density of states maximum calculated by Bilz(12). Preliminary observations in the one-phonon region of germanium have been made on crystals irradiated by electrons and neutrons and doped with Zn." @default.
