- W4244343009 abstract "This chapter discusses the purpose, principle of operation, specifications, and applications of oesophagus manometry. The oesophageal manometry is used to measure pressure within the oesophagus (food pipe) to assist in oesophageal pathology for diagnosis of a variety of abnormalities such as gastric reflux, heartburn, difficulty in swallowing, etc. Oesophagus manometry gives an indication of the ability of the oesophagus to perform peristalsis. The instrumentation for oesophageal manometry set-ups consists of two main hardware components: a pressure sensor/transducer and a recording device. Water-perfused manometric systems depend upon the transmission of the intraluminal pressures to external pressure transducers along a catheter perfused usually with distilled water. Gastrointestinal manometry involves measurement of pressure within various parts of the GI tract, which has a specific motility pattern along its segments. Oesophageal manometry is performed on patients whose symptoms and other investigations, such as endoscopy or radiologic studies, suggest a motor disorder in the oesophagus region." @default.
