Oligomeric aromatic aryl phosphates, notably resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) and bisphenol A bis(diphenyl phosphate) are included in the claims of many patents, and have been found broadly useful because of thermal stability, low volatility, and efficiency.There is a substantial number of patents dealing with dialkylphosphinic acid salts, and, more recently, with hypophosphite salts which are useful in polycarbonates and poly(butylene terephthalate). Especially when synergized by melamine salts, they appear to be effective in nylons.Electronic plastics, especially printed wiring boards, appear to be the largest market for flame retardant polymeric materials. Largely driven by waste disposal regulations in Europe and ‘green’ marketing strategies by OEMs, interest has increased in non-halogen flame retardant systems, particularly in Europe and Asia. Many patents and publications have appeared on epoxy systems in which 9, 10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene 10-oxide is reacted into the polymer. Another product which reacts into the polymer, and has some property and processing advantages is oligomeric resorcinol methylphosphonate.The low scorch flame retardant pentabromodiphenyl ether, widely used in flexible polyurethane foams, was banned and withdrawn from the market; a search became urgent for an environmentally acceptable replacement. Both halogenated and non-halogenated products have been developed for this application; at present a halogen-phosphorus combination is finding some acceptance, but halogen-free phosphorus compounds are in serious development." @default.
