- W4244539114 abstract "High-resolution marine seismic reflection profiles image karst collapse, faulting and fracturing in the Eocene-Miocene carbonates of the southeastern Florida Platform. The seismic data were acquired with towed streamers in Biscayne Bay and along water-control canals in and around Miami. The karst structures are buried beneath Miocene-Holocene sedimentary rocks and a veneer of carbonate sediments and are interpreted to be related to cavern collapses, the larger of which are imaged as deep as 700-800m. The associated subsidence zones above the collapses occur as vertical sags and fracture zones that are pathways for fluid migration. Miami has the world’s largest treated wastewater facilities and pumps more than 200 million gallons per day of injectate into an Eocene cavern system, the Boulder Zone, below a sealing dolomite at 2400-2000 ft subsurface. Where that dolomite seal and those sub-aquifer low permeability confining zones in the overlying Floridan Aquifer System are broken, injectate can migrate upwards and risks mixing with the aquifers. As a consequence of the current high resolution seismic findings, 2D and 3D high resolution marine and land seismic surveys are being used to characterize and explore for deeper injection zones around candidate sites for existing plant expansions and new injection well facilities in Miami." @default.
