A League against Imperialism was formed in Peking in July 1924, and issued an appeal on behalf of oppressed peoples; and two months later, a “Hands off China” society was founded in Moscow, with corresponding societies in Berlin, London and elsewhere.1 In July 1926 an International Association of the Oppressed Peoples held a conference in Canton.2 These ad hoc activities centering on China were complemented early in 1926 by the foundation in Berlin in February 1926 of a “league against colonial cruelties and oppression”, which was apparently designed to counter official propaganda for the restoration to Germany of her lost colonies.3 This organization, of which the indefatigable Münzenberg was one of the promoters, also became involved in protests against imperialist policies in China.4 The idea caught on. Leagues against Imperialism sprang up elsewhere, notably in Latin America.
