- W4244892007 abstract "The Melville family finances were worse when Herman Melville returned from Liverpool than when he had left. The properties that Maria Melville had inherited from her mother and had mortgaged to pay off Gansevoort's bankruptcy debts were a serious burden, borne largely by her brother Peter. When Maria's landlord and neighbor, John M. Caswell, sold the Melville's rented house to William Knickerbacker, things got worse. In moving from Albany to Lansingburgh, Maria had arranged through Caswell for some of her furnishings to be stored by another town resident, Jonathan Whipple. Comparatively speaking, Maria and her children were suffering far less during the Depression of 1839 than nearby renter-farmers in the counties surrounding them and stretching up either side of the Hudson. The Gansevoort and Melvill clans, even in good times, had never been Van Rensselaers or even remotely equivalent to their southern landholding counterpart, the Randolphs of Virginia." @default.
