- W4244962912 abstract "Accurate interpretation of exercise results is dependent upon comparison to appropriate standards. PURPOSE To characterize the exercise response based on height in meters (m), race (AA-African American, C-Caucasian) and gender (M-male, F-female) in normal children undergoing exercise testing with cycle ergometry. METHODS 538 children were studied from 1994 to 2004 with a body surface area (BSA) > 1.20 meters squared (m2). The group was divided into M and F and AA and C. These groups were further divided by height into < 1.6m, 1.6–1.69m and ≥1.7m for M and < 1.6m and ≥ 1.6m for F. RESULTS All groups showed a significant increase in Total Working Capacity (TWC), Max Systolic Blood Pressure (MSBP), and maximal volume of oxygen used (MVO2) (L/min) with increasing height. AA males ≥ 1.6m height had a significantly lower TWC, Max Heart Rate (MHR) and indexed (IMVO2) (ml/kg/min) when compared to C males. Additionally, AA and C males significantly increased cardiac output with increasing height. AA females had a significantly lower TWC and IMVO2 compared to C females. AA and C females had significantly higher cardiac output at increased heights. CONCLUSION These data indicate that appropriate standards for exercise testing must incorporate gender, race and height when using the James cycle ergometer protocol for children with a BSA ≥ 1.2 m2.Table" @default.
