- W4245232502 abstract "Greetings from the Editor Deborah A. Logan Victorians Journal #133, Summer 2018 offers an unusually striking collection of new work on culture and literature of the long nineteenth century. The collection stems from an enormously satisfying scholarly collaboration resulting from the 2017 Family Ties Symposium at University of Otago in Dunedin. Participants' efforts to highlight their individual scholarly interests in the theme of Family Ties inevitably led to collaborations about collaborations—scholarly ties in pursuit of familial ones. This volume most eloquently attests to the richness of those exchanges, ranging from West to East to the Antipodes, and spanning well over a century of creative influence and intellectual inspiration. Topics include canonical authors—Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf—as well as recuperative work on writers, like Jean Ingelow, whose fame during life faded to the margins of literary history after death. Other studies feature ancestors overshadowed by descendants, such as Julia Margaret Cameron by Virginia Woolf. Genre studies shift from immigrants' shipboard diaries to emigrants' novels (Kingsley), both depicting new world realities that clashed dramatically with old world expectations. Also recuperated is the rare Victorian woman artist—here, Alice Mary Chambers—who left behind few clues through which to trace the significance of her work. An insightful overview of the curating process for the Family Ties exhibit emphasizes the topic's appeal beyond academic circles, specifically as that played out in resources to be gleaned in New Zealand. The number concludes with a short-fiction piece imaginatively tracing Emily Bronte's composing a poem, despite the insistent presence of a most prominent family tie, her sister Charlotte. A fitting conclusion to this number, the story anticipates Victorians Journal #134, Winter 2018, which offers a special collection of new work on Emily Brontë to mark the bicentenary of her birth. For their collaborative work on this volume, I thank Thomas McLean and Ruth Knezevich, and all our superlative authors. I am most grateful for the editorial advice and technical expertise of Emily Taylor at Ohio State UP. At Western Kentucky University, I thank Dean Larry Snyder (Potter College) and Department Head Rob Hale (English) for their encouragement and enduring support of Victorians Journal.
