The Image of Elizabeth I in Early Modern Spain. U OF NEBRASKA P, 2019. 420 PP. THIS COLLECTION OF ESSAYS EXAMINES a series of cases that illustrate the range of Spanish attitudes towards Elizabeth both during her reign and over several decades after her death. As it does so, it brings to the foreground a significant collection of texts and a few artifacts, some of which have not yet received all the attention they deserve. The book is divided in three parts, each of which focuses on one pressing issue: (1) the Spanish perception and interpretation of Elizabethan political iconography, (2) the presence of Spain in Elizabethan policies and in the representations of her public persona, and (3) the legacy of her image in Spain after her death. As the second topic suggests, the book goes beyond the discrete subject announced in its title, taking into consideration the wider issue of the codification of Spain within the political discourse broadcast by the Elizabethan political establishment. There are different ways in which the narrative of Anglo–Spanish relations during these decades can be structured. One of the most useful is to focus on dates that mark relevant events, a strategy followed in this volume as the essays trace the evolution of Elizabeth's fortunes in the midst of them. The result is a tableau that includes examinations of the usual suspects, but also discussions of new protagonists, as well as the identification of new paths for further research that promises to offer some fresh perspectives on well-known topics. The volume's broad perspective constitutes a valuable and enticing survey of cases that come to fill a gap not just in the general historiography of the period but also in the growing field of the cultural, political, and literary history of Anglo–Spanish relations in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Olid Guerrero's introduction surveys some of the most relevant scholarship on Anglo–Spanish relations as well as of the most relevant primary sources that document them, from both English and Spanish archives. The diversity of opinions and the abundance of approaches to the figure of Elizabeth demonstrate the fascination with and magnetism of a queen who has long [End Page 181] been construed as a ruler worshipped at home and detested abroad. This collection of scholarly essays, however, provides some counterexamples that generate a more nuanced picture by stressing, for example, that many of the negative stereotypes cast upon Elizabeth were produced by her domestic enemies, including not just English Catholics, but also misogynistic Protestants who abhorred the idea of a female ruler. Some of their pejorative accounts were of course enthusiastically embraced by foreign agents and broadcast in different formats and media, a phenomenon that in turn contributed to her construction as an icon of English national identity back home. In her chapter (From Friendship to Confrontation: Philip II, Elizabeth I, and Spanish–English Relations in the Sixteenth Century), Magdalena de Pazzis Pi Corrales points out that the evolution of these negative views of Elizabeth were part of a much larger and complex tapestry of political propaganda among competing European powers, with one common thread yielding the so-called Black Legend. The chapter deftly traces the complex choreography of English–Spanish diplomacy during the early decades of the seventeenth century, which culminated in a deterioration of relations. The author contextualizes the topics discussed in the rest of the book within a narrative chronological framework that, opportunely situated right after the introduction, makes her chapter a useful gateway for the essays that follow. Another facet of the book is its exploration of textual constructions of Elizabeth in different formats and literary genres. Taken as a group, these essays bring to the readers' attention plays such as Antonio Coello's El conde de Sex (1638), which dealt with Elizabeth's relationship with Essex, and Juan Bautista Diamante's La reina María Estuarda (1670), which took to the stage the personal encounter between Elizabeth Tudor and..." @default.
