- W4245357440 abstract "I have accepted the challenge to be an Associate Editor of Respirology with responsibility to nurture the paediatric content of the Journal. I am head of the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children in Perth,Western Australia. My principal interests are infant pulmonary physiology, asthma genesis, control of breathing and sleep-related changes in respiration and metabolism. Living in Perth, the most isolated capital city in the world, has helped me understand the importance of fostering international ties in order to participate fully in the global advances occurring in medicine. I am convinced that the Asia–Pacific region has the potential to make a significant contribution to our understanding of paediatric respiratory disease and that Respirology is a vehicle that can successfully communicate the region’s scientific achievements in that field to our colleagues around the world. Only in the latter half of last century was the need for specialists in paediatric respiratory medicine recognized. Much of the impetus for the development of the specialty came from the need to understand the physiology of the developing lung in order to manage successfully a variety of infant- and childhood-specific illnesses. These included the pulmonary sequelae of preterm birth, cystic fibrosis and infantile wheezing syndromes. In the past two decades, the information obtained from the follow up of a number of birth cohorts has indicated the importance of pulmonary development and early childhood respiratory morbidity in the pathogenesis and natural history of respiratory diseases seen in adults. The crucial developments incorporated in these recent longitudinal studies were the use of new techniques to reliably measure infant lung function and molecular technology that has allowed genetic information to be used to investigate interactions between genotype, respiratory physiology, environmental exposures and immune maturation. Advances in clinical medicine have resulted from the growth of the paediatric respiratory specialty and have improved the prognosis for diseases such as cystic fibrosis and neonatal chronic lung disease. Individuals who, in the past, have been managed almost exclusively by paediatric respiratory specialists now graduate to adult clinics and, therefore, adult respiratory specialists, now more than ever, need to be familiar with many of the issues that confront their paediatric colleagues. With this in mind, Respirology will highlight important advances in areas of paediatric respiratory medicine with series of reviews by distinguished experts and we will facilitate the publication of high-quality research from the region and around the world. I encourage you to consider submitting articles with a paediatric focus to Respirology. For our part, we will endeavour to obtain the highest pos-sible standard of review and timely responses to submissions." @default.
