- W4245374265 abstract "939 The present study examined the validity of bioelectrical impedance (BIA) equations (EQ) for estimating fat-free weight (FFW) in lean females ( ± SD = 16.7 ± 2.7% fat) by comparing the values to those obtained from underwater weighing (UWW). Thirty-seven Caucasian females ( age = 21 ± 2 yr) participated in the study. FFW from UWW was calculated from % fat using the revised formula of Brozek ( FFW = 52.8 ± 8.4 kg). Six BIA EQs were cross-validated: (Equations 1-6) [Ht2 = height in centimeters squared; R = resistance in ohms; BW = body weight in kg; Xc = reactance in ohms]. Total error (TE), SEE, and constant error (CE) values ranged from 2.9 to 6.3 kg, 1.7 to 3.0 kg, and −1.3 to −5.5 kg, respectively. The results indicated that EQ6 (RJL Systems) which had the lowest TE (2.9 kg) and CE (−1.3 kg, p = 0.003) values most accurately estimated FFW. Simple linear regression showed that FFW was more highly correlated with BW (r = 0.98) and resulted in a lower SEE (1.62 kg) than the variable Ht2/R utilized by the BIA manufacturer (r = 0.92, SEE = 3.4 kg). The addition of Ht2/R, Xc, and/or R to BW accounted for less than 1% additional variance and reduced the SEE by ≤ 0.05 kg. These results suggest that BW alone estimated FFW as accurately as any of the BIA EQs in lean females." @default.
