The current Viewpoint series covers aspects of macrophage biology, thus extending the range of topics covered by these series beyond dendritic cells 1, inflammasomes 2, animal models of disease 3 and Th17 cells/IL-17 4. In this latest set of Viewpoints, Siamon Gordon et al. 5 discuss the F4/80 mAb, one of the initial markers discovered to reliably identify macrophages. The F4/80 mAb is now a tool routinely used in macrophage investigations and without which much of our knowledge of macrophages would not have been possible. Of note, this mAb was first described in EJI 30 years ago 6 and thus can be considered an “EJI classic”. Ten years prior to that, in the very first issue of EJI, the seminal paper by Niels Kaj Jerne 7, a winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1984, was published, outlining his theories regarding the somatic generation of immune diversity – another classic. These influential EJI papers are not just confined to the early EJI issues e.g. the paper by Eugene Butcher et al. describing the organ specificity of lymphocyte homing is a classic from 1980 8. Even more recent articles could be considered as on their way to becoming noted papers. For example, the Cre-reporter mouse described by Hervé Luche et al. in EJI in 2007 is now used worldwide to perform elegant lineage-tracing experiments 9. In order to look back over the past 40 years, the Executive Committee and the Editorial Board of EJI, as well as members of the German Society of Immunology, have selected authoritative EJI papers, both older and more recently published articles that describe not only conceptual but also methodological advances. Starting with the F4/80 mAb highlighted above, these classics will be featured on the EJI website (www.eji-journal.eu), as noted in an Editorial last year 10. We invite you to visit the website regularly to see what the latest EJI classic is. The selected articles may be of particular value if you teach immunology or are someone new to the subject who wants to understand the background and how the field developed. Alternatively, you may just want to visit the EJI homepage out of curiosity to see if you agree/disagree with the selections made. Regardless of your motivations for following this new online venture, we hope that you find articles of interest. Perhaps you will have suggestions for papers that we have overlooked and, if so, we’ll be pleased to hear from you; just email the editorial office (ejied@wiley.com) with your suggestion and the reasons for choosing the paper. We look forward to hearing from you! Cate Livingstone Managing editor e-mail: clivings@wiley.com References 1Steinman, R. M., Eur. J. Immunol. 2010. 40: 2085– 2088. 2Fitzgerald, K., Eur. J.
