- W4246044212 abstract "Certain subsets of the equine patient population are less capable of tolerating periods of malnutrition, and these include: foals, ponies, miniature horses, donkeys, and obese individuals. The use of parenteral nutrition (PN) could be of benefit in ensuring adequate nutritional intake for many patients, particularly during the early stages of disease or recovery from surgery. The rate of administration for PN solutions is dependent upon the energy density of the solution used, as the requirements for amino acids and lipids will be addressed in the formulation of the solution. As PN is rarely administered to horses for a prolonged period of time, the primary goal of PN support is prevention of severe malnutrition and entry into a severely catabolic state during the time period prior to full resumption of enteral feeding." @default.
