- W4246185502 abstract "Brian O’Leary SJ, To Love and to Serve: Exploring the Ignatian Tradition. Selected Essays (Dublin: Messenger Publications, 2020), 240 pages. In the Preface, Fr Brian O’Leary indicates clearly both the context and the purpose of his latest publication. The spiritual renewal inspired by the Second Vatican Council stimulated the rediscovery of the original spirit of St Ignatius of Loyola as expressed in the Spiritual Exercises and The Constitutions of the Society of Jesus. O’Leary situates himself clearly in the ‘second wave’ of English-speaking researchers of these foundational texts. He ‘stands on the shoulders of giants’. The first wave of Jesuit researchers includes James Walsh and Michael Ivens of the British Province and Joe Veale of the Irish Province. In fact, it was Joe Veale’s Manifold Gifts, in 2006, published only after the author’s death, that first sowed the seed for this new book. O’Leary is attempting to share the fruits of his research and reflections on Ignatian spirituality with a wider public while he is still in a position to do the editing himself. The book is divided into five parts, each consisting of a set of articles, talks and papers delivered on various occasions between 1985 and 2019. Each part begins with its own short introduction. The first part covers the Spiritual Exercises, while the second part covers The Constitutions. These two parts make up more than half the book. The third part concerns Saint Pierre Favre, the fourth part contains what he calls Ignatian Varia, and the fifth part is devoted to Spirituality General. The parts can be read independently, as all the necessary information is included in each. In Part I, O’Leary presents us with nine short articles, each one focusing on a key clarification of the Ignatian meaning of a particular term encountered over the course of the four weeks of the Spiritual Exercises. For example, in ‘Magnanimity: An Ignatian Virtue’, he clarifies the meaning of the Ignatian virtue of ‘generosity’. In his youth, Ignatius considered Amadis de Gaul a hero. So, the Ignatian virtue has its roots in the heroic fortitude of soul required of the medieval knight in the service of his lord or lady. Now, the soldier of Christ serves the Eternal Lord. Hence magnanimity might be a more apt translation than generosity. In ‘Ruminating on the Two Standards’, the story of the apparently placid and imperturbable Jesuit brother Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez, who kept a diary of his spiritual combat, proves that the deep struggle between the ‘good spirits’ or ‘Angels’ and the ‘bad spirits’ or ‘demons’ is a continuous and life-long battle. Autumn 2021: Book Reviews Studies • volume 110 • number 439 383 In ‘Discernment and Decision-Making’, O’Leary recalls the quotation, ‘a discernment that does not lead to a decision is an abortion’. The discerning person has the responsibility to work through false images of God and inadequate models of faith until an ‘I-Thou’ love encounter with God can take place. God is the goal which guides the human and divine interaction to a definitive and integrating foundational desire. In ‘The Mystery and Message of the Third and Fourth Weeks’, the author shows how Caryll Houselander, the English mystic, experienced her sharing of others’ suffering as part of her sharing in the Passion of Christ. He argues that this Passion extends to all creation, thus including ecological awareness. In the ‘Fourth Week: The Joy of the Risen Christ’, he clarifies the selfless nature of the spiritual joy experienced and shared with Christ the Consoler. In this first section of the book, one may have the impression of panning for gold in a muddy river as the Ignatian insights are sometimes well hidden within scholarly prose. Part II deals with ‘The Jesuit Constitutions’. It also contains nine articles. It is probably this part of the book that contains the most interesting and novel aspect of O’Leary’s work. Following on from the reflections of Joe Veale in Manifold Gifts, O’Leary shows how not only do the Constitutions increase our appreciation of the Ignatian charism in the action of Jesuit governance, but they also illustrate how spiritual discernment can be applied..." @default.
