- W4246297029 abstract "0483 There is some evidence suggesting that body size may affect the accuracy of air displacement plethysmography (AP), potentially due to a smaller ratio of chamber volume to subject volume among larger individuals. PURPOSE: Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of musculoskeletal development on the accuracy of estimates of body fatness (%fat) via AP. METHODS: Estimates of %fat were made via AP, hydrostatic weighing (HW), dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and the criterion, a four-component model (4C) in 64 men, who were either resistance trained (RT), n = 28 or served as controls (C), n = 36. RESULTS: Based on a two-way (musculoskeletal development × method) ANOVA with repeated measures, there was a significant effect of musculoskeletal development on the validity of the estimation of %fat from AP. The mean difference in %fat between AP and 4C was less in RT (1.5% fat) than in C (5.3% fat), but a large SEE of 5.5% was observed for RT compared to 3.0% for C. In addition, the total error, which accounts for systematic and individual differences, was also larger for RT (5.3%) than found for C (2.9%). A significant (P<0.05) correlation was found between the mean bias between methods and body volume (−.44) and mesomorphy (−.55). Estimates of %fat from HW were similar to 4C in both RT and C. No differences were observed between DXA and 4C for RT, but DXA was 1.8% fat lower for C. CONCLUSIONS: Although the mean bias in %fat estimates from AP and 4C is less in individuals with high musculoskeletal development, the large random error in mesomorphic individuals should be cause for concern when interpreting individual results." @default.
