- W4246504595 abstract "Drawing from the writings of social anthropologist, Timothy Ingold, this chapter examines the concepts of meshwork of paths and wayfaring within the context of scholarly practitioners and researchers undertaking research in, of and through three-dimensional (3D) virtual world inquiries to answer the question: How can these concepts provide a useful framework for analysing scholars’ research processes and spatial practices to render emergent spaces more visible? According to Ingold, human existence unfolds along paths and not in places, and is not place-bounding but place-binding. People are wayfarers who are ‘always somewhere, yet every ‘somewhere’ is on the way to somewhere else’. He states the lines of movement are like those secreted from the body of the spider as it moves, being lines along which one acts and perceives. Places are like knots, threaded by lines of wayfaring. The lines trail beyond the knot to be entangled with other lines in other places, making up the meshwork, or interweaving of lines; not connectors and not a network but a meshwork of paths and wayfaring. Virtual landscapes, just as physical landscapes, can be seen to generate meaning, through spatial practices, language and visual discourse in an array of related features and contexts. Ingold is credited with the term taskscape, meaning an array of related activities. Both landscape and taskspace are not static but perpetually in process. The individual researcher is part of this multimodal landscape and influences the research object in invisible ways. Starting from Ingold’s statement that ‘“Space”, of course, is just a word, and you can use it to mean what you like’, the focus of this chapter is on the implications of scholars’ choices in their research process in their own virtual world inquiries, the constraints and influences, and the emerging meshwork of paths and wayfaring." @default.
