Successfully managing complex, multiagency projects, such as NREL's wind energy technology developments, takes more than a sophisticated project control system. For the conventional project management system to work, we need an additional system of “self-forcing control.” We have to foster a culture of collaboration and commitment across the whole project community and its support functions. This chapter first takes a specific look at the issues and challenges. It then presents the responses of a field study of 500 project leaders characterizing collaboration and commitment. Using primarily data from the recent field study, the chapter summarizes the basic drivers of commitment in complex project environments. It discusses people-oriented, organizational, and work/task related influences to commitment." @default.
