Dehydration, separation of volatile organic compounds from water, or separation of organic-organic mixtures are the major fields of application, mainly when azeotropes or close-boiling point components are present. However, understanding how the separation is taking place is not straightforward. In this chapter, the evaluation of the process performance (using transmembrane fluxes and separation factors) and the membrane performance (using permeances or permeabilities and selectivities) is described. The importance of analyzing the driving force so that the target permeant is identified is also highlighted. The application of McCabe-Thiele diagrams to make fair comparisons among membranes and distillation is shown. Coupling effects are also evaluated in order to go deeper in the understanding of mass transfer through the membrane. Finally, a general procedure to carry out a complete evaluation of pervaporation is proposed." @default.
