A multicentre randomised trial in which 272 infants ≤32 weeks gestation served as their own controls examined changes in heart rate, sucking behaviour and sleep when infants were played parent-preferred ‘song of kin’ culturally significant lullabies (‘Twinkle’ was played if no preference stated), breathing sounds (‘ocean disc’ meant to simulate the sounds in the womb), heartbeat rhythms (‘gato box’) or left in peace (controls).1 Infants’ heart rates were significantly lower over time with all three interventions compared with controls. All interventions but particularly ocean disc showed an increase in positive sleep patterns. Sucking behaviour improved with gato box. Oxygen saturation improved with lullaby, but more with Twinkle than with song of kin. Parental stress decreased when any music was played. The paper had some errors, e.g. the results in the abstract and in the Table differed from those in the results section. If the staff can stand the repetitive music, this paper gives some evidence that music helps preterm infants and their parents and is unique in the type of music studied. Reference 1 Loewy J et al.
