- W42467555 abstract "The fascination of Quo Vadis? by Henryk Sienkiewicz swept the Amer ican Union almost immediately after its publication?in fall 1896. In Decem ber the book was entered for the first time on the bestseller lists. For the entire year 1897, the novel took a permanent position on these lists and maintained it for about eighteen months. De luxe editions in two volumes, carefully illustrated and bound, which Sienkiewiczs Boston publishers, Little, Brown & Co., put on the market before the Christmas holidays, were quickly sold out; the price amounting to six and twelve dollars per copy did not seem to deter the purchasers. This phenomenal success tempted other publishers to a feverish com petition. Russia did not belong to the international copyright agreement. Since Sienkiewicz lived in the Russian-dominated part of Poland, his works lacked any legal protection in the United States. Sooner or later competitive editions were bound to appear. In December 1897, Altemus of Philadelphia issued another translation of Quo Vadis?, and this example was followed by other publishers. At least thirty-four American firms printed works by Sienkiewicz. The stage performances and the films based on Quo Vadis? contributed to its popularity among the readers. It was also recommended for the schools. In order to assess properly such phenomenal vogue, a comprehensive bibliography seemed to be a natural requirement. However, it was not yet compiled. The list of the publications of Quo Vadis? in English enclosed in the 59th volume of Sienkiewiczs Dziela contained mainly the London re prints and registered only nine American editions. No attempt was yet made in America to investigate more thoroughly the standing of the novel on the book market. There was some justification of this prolonged reticence. Many cheap editions did not withstand the test of time and practically vanished. To make the price more competitive, they were often printed on paper of a very low quality which was quickly wasted away by the enthusiastic readers. The only way of tracing such editions was to peruse the catalogues of prints and the library items withdrawn from circulation. And there was no guarantee that the record would be complete. The attached bibliography is an attempt to close the gap. It does not pretend to be exhaustive, but it gives a more adequate reflection of the American diffusion of the book than the previous lists. Wherever it was possible, the prices of the reprints were inserted; they could vary according to the quality of paper and the binding. On two occasions the Canadian publi cations were included." @default.
