- W4246902172 abstract "Introduction: Injuries from trauma is a disease which effects all emergency physicians. As with any disease traumatic injuries need to be studied in detail to provide accurate information for the multiple databanks that have been developed as survellience systems. Traumatic deaths which are pronounced in the field are often overlooked as a possible learning tool. As specialist on-call availability steadily declines the field of emergency medicine will become the leaders in the study of traumatic disease by default. Emergency physicians will always be on the front lines in the management of trauma. Research of trauma victims is essential to our ability to provide good medical care. Autopsy reports are frequently not descriptive enough for injury pattern data to be extracted in a useable form. However, autopsy remains the finest tool for quality assessment and evaluation of medical diagnosis, treatment and reconstruction of injuries (force, biomechanics and dynamics). Often after a traumatic death in the field an investigator will pronounce the victim and give their impression of the clinical cause of death. While field investigators are vital in this capacity, studies have shown that clinical impressions of cause of death are incorrect in up to 30% of cases. As research institutions, industry and government work toward mitigation of traumatic injuries it becomes imperative that traumatic injuries are recorded accurately. Limited studies have shown postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) to be superior to autopsy for fracture patterns, thorax lesions and equivicable for brain lesions. In terms of reconstruction of injuries (force, biomechanics, and dynamics) radiologic imaging was overall superior to autopsy in relation to the MVC victims. PMCT injury analysis has never been formally done in the United States." @default.
