- W4246948367 abstract "This chapter helps the student to differentiate between magnetostrictive and piezoelectric ultrasonic transduction and adjust the operational variables as necessary in order to operate the ultrasonic scaling unit at a level of acoustic power appropriate for the treatment objective. It defines the mechanisms of action by which ultrasonic instruments remove deposits from the tooth surface and explains the relationship of key operational variables to the acoustic power produced by the ultrasonic scaling unit. Ultrasonic scaling instruments oscillate (move forward and backward) a typically blunt metal tip at a high-frequency producing mechanical vibratory, cavitational and acoustic microstreaming forces that remove/disrupt the deposits. Operational variables common to all oscillating scaling technologies – sonic and ultrasonic magnetostrictive and piezoelectric – include operating frequency, power setting, and water flow rate. The minimum effective power required will vary according to the type of deposit to be removed (task at hand) and the type of generator and design of tip utilized." @default.
