- W4246994016 abstract "As stated by us previously (1Goldfarb J.M. Desai N. Clinical experience reported as a retrospective study.Fertil Steril. 2003; 80: 1123Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Google Scholar), we are well aware of the problems with retrospective analyses. We do, however, feel that retrospective reports of clinical experiences are valuable to readers, as long as the readers are sophisticated enough to appreciate the differences between these reports and prospective, randomized, clinical trials. We believe the readers of Fertility and Sterility do possess this sophistication. The manner in which clinical situations are approached by large successful programs is of interest and value to readers; talking to colleagues at meetings about approaches to clinical situations is a major value of our annual meeting. We are pleased that the “Controversy” section of Fertility and Sterility allows for these types of presentations and rebuttals to be available monthly. Dr. Check suggests pooling of retrospective data. Although this might be of interest, there would clearly be more variables introduced. Therefore, despite the larger size of the studies, they would have the same shortcomings as smaller, one-center, retrospective analyses. Clearly, even those of us who see some value in retrospective analyses would much prefer randomized, prospective, controlled studies to assess stimulation protocols for IVF." @default.
