- W4247178514 abstract "Diabetic foot is defined as the presence of infection, ulceration and/or destruction of deep tissues associated with neurologic abnormalities and various degrees of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in the lower limb in patients with diabetes. Foot ulceration and amputation affect largely patients' quality of life and place an economical burden on both the patient and the healthcare system. The major risk factors for foot ulceration are a loss of protective sensation due to neuropathy, PAD and trauma. Beyond neuropathy and PAD, a history of previous foot ulceration or amputation, foot deformities, calluses, neuro-osteoarthropathy and high plantar pressures have been associated with an increased risk for foot ulceration. Cigarette smoking is also considered a risk factor for foot ulceration because it is associated strongly with both PAD and neuropathy. The Meggitt-Wagner classification is the best known and validated system for foot ulcers." @default.
