- W4247195959 abstract "Orthopaedic traumatology is a subspecialty of orthopaedic surgery, which has found a home closely aligned with our general surgery, neurosurgery, and microsurgery colleagues in the care of the patient with skeletal injuries. The scope of the practice of orthopaedic trauma includes stabilization of acute fractures in all anatomic locations, delayed reconstruction of nonunion, malunion, and infection, and assuming administrative responsibility for the study, design, and development of orthopaedic trauma care. The orthopaedic traumatologist frequently is subjected to a complex patient population with a high potential for poor outcomes, requiring care at odd hours, thereby taking its toll on time for research, teaching, and personal responsibilities. With this diverse practice requirement, the fellowship training of orthopaedic traumatology has never assumed such a high degree of responsibility as is required currently. The University of California, Davis Orthopaedic Department has a long, rich tradition of commitment to the teaching, research, and the practice of orthopaedic trauma. Under the direction of the current chairman, Dr. Michael W. Chapman, the goals of modern trauma care have been realized and expanded during the past 20 years at this Sacramento based trauma hospital. Dr. Chapman was trained at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. He was exposed early to the concepts of centralized trauma care at the San Francisco General Hospital under the direction of Dr. Edwin Bovill, at which time Dr. Chapman began his illustrious career in orthopaedic trauma. Having completed his early tenure in San Francisco and returning from Europe with fresh ideas regarding the future needs of the traumatologist, Dr. Chapman began his quest for trauma excellence as chairman of orthopaedics at the University of California, Davis in 1979. He immediately directed the development of the University of California, Davis Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship program, encouraging fellows to complete projects in the basic and clinical sciences. Dr. Chapman always has thought the success of long term clinical outcomes was founded on sound basic science principles and efficient, dignified patient care. With this philosophy, the laboratory at the University of California, Davis has grown to a world class center for the study of mechanics on a macrostructural and microstructural level. The use of bone substitutes, implant design and development, and biomechanical analyses of the hip and other joints have been the focus of major projects in this research center. Many of the graduates of the trauma fellowship have moved into appointments at major universities, whereas others entered community positions. All the fellows have directed a major portion of their practice toward the advancement of trauma care. The articles included in the symposium are contributions from graduates of the trauma fellowship program, and from the director, Dr. Chapman. This collective work represents years of experience in patient care and research from orthopaedic traumatologists from throughout the United States. This symposium represents only a small portion of the orthopaedic traumatologists trained since 1980, and reflects the quality of training in orthopaedic traumatology at the University of California, Davis Medical Center.
