- W4247228927 abstract "Estrogens and androgens influence the development of the skeleton during growth and its maintenance during adulthood. This chapter reviews what is currently known about the biosynthesis of gonadal steroids and how androgens can be converted to estrogens. It analyzes the role of the estrogen and androgen receptors in the effects of these two hormones on bone, the signaling pathways activated by these receptors, the biologic effects of estrogens or androgens on different bone cell types, and their effects on skeletal growth. The chapter also discusses the interaction between sex steroid deficiency and aging on bone, the contribution of sex steroid deficiency to the development of osteoporosis, and finally the role of natural estrogens or related synthetic compounds in the treatment of osteoporosis." @default.
