By detecting these ions and light, trace quantities of elements within the samples can be analyzed. The light and ions are generated not only by the high temperature of the plasma but also as a result of the complex atomic/molecular process within plasma. By understanding this process, the characteristics of plasma (e.g. the connection between operating conditions of the analysis equipment and the results of the analysis) and the effect to elements other than analytes, a clear understanding of phenomena such as the matrix effect can be acquired.
