- W4247350069 abstract "As NEUROSURGERY enters its thirty-first year of publication, let us keep in mind the word “omnibus,” from the Latin “for all.” During the past fifteen years, the Journal has maintained a concerted effort to represent “all” of neurosurgery–all individuals, locations, and points of view within the field. No idea or perspective has been excluded or minimized because of individual bias. A consistent effort has been made to hear, honestly evaluate, and present all that is currently fresh and important in our field to remind readers of unusual contributions of the past, and share new ideas, without exclusion. The Editorial Board has been composed to represent all locales, regions, and sections of the field; its membership contains the full spectrum of experience–from the embryonic resident to the emeritus professor–and runs the gamut of practical application. The practitioner, laboratory scientist, and academician are all represented on the board of review. This inclusive approach has been proven true through internationalism, which has been carefully attended to with the ongoing representation of the International Advisory Board, and now, the Editor's International Advisory Panel, which represents all continents, includes more than 40 countries, and is composed of nearly 200 prominent individuals in the field. All of these members play an active role in the peer-review process, particularly with submissions from their indigenous country and region. Through Ovid, the penetration of the Journal and its products is over 13 million readers, with more than 6 million outside of North America. More than 2500 institutions have licensures to the NEUROSURGERY-ONLINE platform, which is robust and truly international with millions of international visits per year. At this time, more than sixty percent of the several thousand yearly submissions to NEUROSURGERY are from outside of North America, with publication rates for international authors being approximately the same as those from their North American colleagues. Review of each issue's table of contents shows the flavor of internationalism that has been established in the Journal. In the past decade, I have represented the Journal in virtually every continent and world region, and it is apparent that, with a number of exceptions, as the world is flattening, so too is neurosurgery in the intellectual sense. Through the convenience of air travel, the presence of international journals, international meetings, and the Internet, information is being made readily available to all and ideas are flourishing and being universally shared. Thus, there is both an information deluge and a knowledge revolution. Economics play a key role in local and regional availability of “modern” capabilities, but knowledge and the appreciation of the current status of the field is moving rapidly toward universality. In this evolving process, the Journal's theme is and will remain “omnibus”: for all, representing all, and involving all who wish to participate. I am convinced that this policy is largely responsible for the great success and popularity the Journal currently enjoys. Michael L.J. Apuzzo Los Angeles, California" @default.
