Overall, homicide is the fourth leading cause of death in the workplace in the United States. For women, homicide is the leading cause of death in the workplace. During the 1990s rates of workplace violence reached high levels, which spurred the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to declare workplace homicide a public health epidemic. According to OSHA , workplace violence can result in psychological trauma, an inability to return to work, altered relationships with colleagues and family, perceptions of guilt, powerlessness, and incompetence, as well as concerns that supervisors may criticize their actions.
