- W4247676402 abstract "Publisher SummaryThis chapter discusses upward lightning and the artificial initiation of lightning. Artificially initiated lightning refers to a discharge that occurs due to the presence of a man-made structure or event. Such lightning is characterized by an initial upward-moving leader. Upward-initiated lightning has no “first return stroke” of the type always observed in normal downward-initiated lightning; rather its place is taken by an upward-moving leader and any continuous current that may follow when that leader reaches the cloud. The most commonly occurring artificially initiated lightning is that generated by leaders moving upward from the tops of tall man-made structures, such as the Empire State Building in New York City, the towers on Mt. San Salvatore in Lugano, and the CN Tower in Toronto. These upward-moving leaders are often immediately preceded by cloud discharges that provide, in a fraction of a second, high electric fields at structure level that serve to initiate the leaders. Lightning can also be artificially initiated by rapidly introducing conductors into strong static electric fields. The technique of artificially initiating lightning via small rockets with trailing ground wires has been described by Fieux—a small rocket is fired upward at a speed of nearly 200 m/sec and a grounded wire is unspooled either from the earth or from the rocket." @default.
