- W4247931390 abstract "This introductory chapter explains the coverage of this book, which is about the rise of the barrister and the social history of the bar in early modern England. Barristers were official recognized as men learned in the law for the first time by a parliament statute of 1532 but it was not until 1590 that being called to the bar of an Inn of Court was established as the minimum necessary qualification for audience as a counsellor before the superior common-law courts. It is difficult to accurately chart the timing of barristers' rise because of deficiencies in surviving records but some data showed that the dramatic numerical expansion of the bar occurred during the 16th and early 17th centuries." @default.
