- W4248223010 abstract "Popularizers of scientific Malthusian population doctrine are fortunate indeed that few of their readers trouble to read Malthus' own Essay on the Principles of Population. Only the first six pages of the Essay sketch (without proof) the thesis that human populations grow in geometric ratio (2:4:8:16:32, etc.) while the food supply can only grow in arithmetical ratio (1: 2: 3: 4: 5, etc). Malthus from then on considered this thesis self-evident. Part of his book is an inconsequential enumeration of population trends in different countries-including some pornographic and racist accounts of sex habits among primitive people. The part of the Essay which he considered most important, however, is his discussion of the value and implications of his theory. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website." @default.
