- W4248283507 abstract "Bacterioplankton are the single-celled members of the domains Bacteria and Archaea that constitute the vast majority of taxonomic diversity in the world ocean. Although best known as heterotrophs and widely recognized for their important role in marine foodwebs, the bacterioplankton are metabolically diverse and mediate many critical biogeochemical processes in a variety of marine habitats. These habits include the oxidized water column, sinking marine particles, the surfaces of phytoplankton cells, and oxygen minimum zones (OMZs). The bacterioplankton are responsible for breaking down particulate organic matter (POM) and recycling the dissolved components; regenerating nutrients from phytoplankton detritus, and producing nitrate from ammonium through nitrification. Owing to their small size (typically < 1 μm in length) and immense diversity the bacterioplankton are particularly difficult to study. However, new physiological assays and a growing suite of high-throughput molecular techniques (collectively termed “omics”) have greatly improved our understanding of bacterioplankton ecology in the global ocean." @default.
