- W4248302244 abstract "THE RADIO ENDED IT ALL. CERTAINLY, the invention of the radio by the British Italian engineer Guglielmo Marconi in 1895 even predated the avant-garde, but the German and Italian fascist regimes implemented radio as a ubiquitous media only in 1933—a time when Futurism faded out and Dadaists fled Germany from Hitler’s menace. However, this political use of the medium was not the reason that the avant-garde experiment vanished in the ether. The Futurists as well as the Dadaists recognized the ability to broadcast data wirelessly as a clear sign that the future had arrived and a new human being would emerge in this media ecology that even superseded the technological fantasies of the avant-garde. The radio manifesto “La Radia” of 1933 documents this assessment of the wireless.1 In it, Marinetti claims that this medium represents the ultimate means to achieve the Futurist goals, thereby cannibalizing all previous achievements such as parole in libertà or l’arte dei rumori. The radio becomes for Marinetti the instrument of a permanent, omnipresent contact with the audience. It does not wait for its listeners; it rather always broadcasts and constantly demands that everybody congregate in front of a receiver. This technical but intimate connection to the audience will be the model for Marinetti’s radio plays that want to connect the Italian people through a mere physiological shock aesthetic to the apparatus." @default.
