- W4248385770 abstract "Intracellular recordings were obtained from neurons of medial and intralaminar nonspecific nuclei during low-frequency stimulation of n. ventralis anterior (VA) and n. ventralis lateralis (VL) of the thalamus. VA-VL stimuli yielding typical primary and augmenting responses of motor cortex also elicited prolonged PSPs in the vast majority of medial thalamic (MTh) neurons encountered.A large proportion of MTh neurons exhibited short-latency prolonged IPSPs in response to the first stimulus of a repetitive train. Subsequent stimuli resulted in a variety of PSP alterations including IPSP attenuation, IPSP alteration, latency increases of IPSPs, development of EPSPs and marked potentiation of EPSPs.PSP patterns observed in MTh neurons during VA-VL stimulation resemble those elicited in rostrolateral and ventrolateral regions of the thalamus during medial and intralaminar stimulation. Exceptions are noted only in respect to short-latency IPSPs which are characteristically observed in MTh neurons following VA-VL stimulation. The data establish the existence of the reciprocal internuclear interneuronal pathways linking speific and nonspecific nuclei of the thalamus. Inhibition of MTh neurons during activation of VA-VL elements may provide a mechanism for enhancing the effectiveness of a specific projection pathway to motor cortex by suppression of background nonspecific thalamocortical influences." @default.
