- W4248391494 abstract "Publisher SummaryA high capacity of molecular recognition is at the basis of the structure and operation of all living systems. Many of these substances can be exploited for assays in connection with, or similar to, enzyme immunoassays (EIAs). The chapter also explains avidin/biotin systems. It is rapidly becoming an important tool for EIAs because (1) avidin has an exceptionally high affinity for (+)-biotin (1015 M−1), (2) (+)-biotin is very easily coupled to antibodies and to many enzymes often without any loss of activity, and (3) avidin is very stable and has several binding sites, so that it may be used as a bridging molecule between two biotinylated molecules. The use of the avidin/biotin system produces superior detectabilities and low background levels. The chapter also illustrates the preparation of avidin and biotinylated immunoassay reactants." @default.
