- W4248556054 abstract "The general toxicity of local anesthetic agents has been recently reviewed by Covino, who has the opinion that these drugs are relatively free of side effects if they are administered in an appropriate dosage and in the appropriate anatomical location. Two categories of toxic reactions may be encountered: systemic toxic reactions due usually to an accidental intravascular or subarachnoid injection, and local tissue toxicity. The chapter explains side effects such as allergy, methemoglobinemia, malignant hyperthermia, influence of patient's condition on toxicity, and drug interactions. Effects related to different modes of use, such as epidural and spinal anesthesia, obstetric extradural analgesia, retrobulbar block and facial block, hematoma blocks, rectal administration, local anesthesia, and local dental anesthesia. The chapter also explains effects related to individual compounds such as bupivacaine, chloroprocaine, lidocaine, oxybuprocaine, prilocaine, and tetracaine." @default.
