- W4248583070 abstract "0521 PURPOSE: This study was designed to examine the combined effects of high protein diet and aerobic exercise on body composition and blood lipid profile in overweight women. METHODS: A total of 30 women was equally divided into three groups; high protein diet and exercise group (PE, 24 ± 2 yrs, 161 ± 6 cm, 59 ± 4 kg, and 30 ± 3 % body fat), exercise only group (EO, 25 ± 3, 160 ± 7, 57 ± 10, & 27 ± 2, respectively), and control group (CO, 25 ± 2, 160 ± 3, 57 ± 5, & 29 ± 3, respectively), and participated in an experiment lasted for eight weeks. Daily diet included 25% of isolated soybean protein (>90% protein, approximately 400 kcal) with isocaloric daily intake for PE, and the exercise program consisted of >3 times/wk and >30 min/session at an intensity of 50–60% of maximal heart rate with aerobic-type exercises. Aerobic capacity, body composition, total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and triglycerides (TG) were measured before and after the experimental period. RESULTS: Maximal aerobic capacity was increased after the experiment in both PE (from 27.2 ± 3.5 to 35.1 ± 5.9 ml/kg/min, P<0.01) and EO (from 29.8 ± 3.7 to 33.8 ± 3.8 ml/kg/min, P<0.05), and these were significantly higher than that in CO (P<0.05). Percent body fat was reduced by 4.3% (26 ± 2%, P<0.01) in PE and 1.2% (25 ± 3%, P<0.05) in EO after the experiment, while no differences were found in CO. Lean body mass did not change in all groups. TC decreased (from 168 ± 20 to 155 ± 18 mg/dL) and HDL (from 57 ± 9 to 61 ± 9 mg/dL) increased in PE (P<0.01), but no changes in these variables in EO and CO were found. TG did not vary in all groups. CONCLUSIONS: Although the exercise only group showed a similar outcome to the high protein diet and exercise combined group, the favorable changes of body composition and blood lipid as well as an improvement of aerobic capacity were more marginal in the latter group." @default.
