- W4248753864 abstract "Urban consumers raise concerns about the animal welfare costs of farming practices that were originally devised, at least in part, to maximise the availability and minimise the financial cost of animal-derived products. Familiar examples are the high-density management of pigs and poultry, nutritional inadequacy in high-yielding dairy cows and the transport and slaughter of livestock. However, a potentially sensitive issue that is receiving growing attention is the impact of production-orientated breeding strategies, induction of birth and neonatal management on the mortality and welfare of newborn farm animals. The potent image of debilitated, dying or dead newborns raises questions such as: How much neonatal death may be justified by the natural hazards of birth? Is financially or production-driven breeding for greater litter size, which is accompanied by an inevitable increase in mortality rate, acceptable? Should healthy newborns be euthanised in anticipation of almost certain poor welfare later? In what ways might the genetically pre-programmed, culturally reinforced human emotional commitment to care for and protect vulnerable young influence ethical thinking about the management of newborn farm animals? These questions are considered by referring to examples of production-orientated approaches used in the dairy, sheep and pig industries." @default.
