- W424877110 abstract "The elevated level of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) has been reported to be asso-ciated with cardiovascular complications in diabetes. Using different 5-HT receptor agonists and antagonists, 5-HT receptors were found to be involved in glycemic control. Sarpogre-late, 5-HT2A receptor antagonist, was shown to produce beneficial effects in type 1 and type 2 diabetic rats. It not only reduced serum glucose and lipid levels, but was also found to increase serum insulin in type 1 diabetic rats. In view of the antiplatelet aggregation and anti-ischemic effects of 5-HT2A receptor antagonists, as well as of the increased incidence of myocardial infarction, it appears that 5-HT2A antagonists may prove useful in the treatment of diabetes. Accordingly, it is suggested that 5-HT2A receptors may be considered as a novel target to develop anti-diabetic drugs to prevent the cardiovascular complications associated with diabetes.Key words5-HydroxytryptamineSarpogrelateCardiovascular SystemDiabetes" @default.
