Cumulative survival rates were calculated using the life table method. A group of 302 patients, representing approximately one third of the total dialysis population in the United States, was observed over a period of up to 7 years; 53 patients have been observed for 2 or more years. Of the original 302 patients, 48 are dead. Four of these deaths were directly attributable to human or mechanical error during the dialysis procedure. Eighty-seven percent of the patients...
