- W4248943314 abstract "This chapter describes the original statue of Foscolo, Zulimo Rossellini's funereal monument, which depicts the poet on his deathbed surrounded by his muses. The literary iconography of this original monument reflects more accurately than its replacement the vast amounts of patriotic poetry and prose that Foscolo produced on behalf of Italy after his exile. Not surprisingly, the Fascist regime installed the replacement statue as part of its ongoing strategy of connecting Italy's military and cultural glories. The replacement tomb of Foscolo in Santa Croce suggests the Fascist desire to promote a militarist and imperialist political agenda by underscoring the soldierly, virile qualities of its writers. In representing authors like Foscolo in this way, the Fascists believed they were showing Italians that the literary avatars of their nation embodied Fascist ideals of war, glory, and statism—ideals that made these authors treasured heirs of an imperial Roman past." @default.
